University of Greifswald Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Greifswald is one of five faculties of the university, situated in Greifswald, Germany.

The research and teaching focus of the Faculty of Arts ("Philosophishe Fakultät") lies with the languages and cultures of northern Europe and Eastern Europe. Some subjects such as Latvian and Lithuanian Studies, Slavic Studies, Finnish Studies (including Estonian Studies) and Scandinavian Studies are only offered by few other universities in Germany.

In addition, other classic disciplines such as German Studies, English Studies, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Music and Church Music are offered as well. The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Institut, named for painter Caspar David Friedrich, who was born in Greifswald and received his first artistic lessons here, offers degrees in Fine Arts and Art History.

The "Greifswald Canadian Fellow in Residence" programme, which is funded by the University of Greifswald and the Canadian government, provides support for a Canadian author to live and write in Greifswald for one academic year. The fellows usually also contribute to authentic, up-to-date teaching at the English Department and they often take part in events that are open to the general public. Former fellows include Warren Cariou (2005), and Janice Kulyk Keefer (2006).

Courses are offered on the under-graduate (B.A., three years) and post-graduate (M.A., two years) level.
