New College, University of New South Wales is a residential college, located in the UNSW campus in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in 1969 as part of the work of the New University Colleges' Council[1] [2]

Although the college is built on Anglican principles, it is home to both local and international students of all backgrounds. The original college houses 250 undergraduate students including 8 student Residential Advisors and 11 Academic Tutors, the college hosts regular formal dinners with renowned guest speakers.

New College is also home to the Centre for Apologetic Scholarship and Education (CASE) which specialises in Christian apologetics. The college has a strong academic focus with around 45% of its undergraduate students maintaining at least a distinction average. The original New College building enforces a strict no alcohol policy whilst in College itself, this rule was set in place by the founders and ensures an environment in which excessive consumption of alcohol plays no part. New College celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009.

New College Student Body

In the undergraduate community the student body is represented by the New College Student Association (NCSA), which seeks to facilitate and develop community involvement, both within the college and externally. It is an active student association on campus with social and sporting events held every week of the academic session. The selection process involved in gaining acceptance into New College is rigorous with Academic Referees, characters referees and interviews with the Dean of Residents to determine their suitability for the college. New College aims to expose its residents to a range of new opportunities that they would not have previously had access to.

Yearly Events At New College

New College's community consists of many internal student committees, these committees in turn, organise and run many events with the college. These events include an annual college ski trip, a wine & cheese tasting weekend & international relief project such as Habitat For Humanity where students fly to third world countries and help build homes. Some of the annual events throughout the year include O-Week, the NCSA Winter Ball, Hens' and Bucks' Night, Band Night and the Fresher vs Oldies sporting events. New College is known to host a formal dinner every 4-6 weeks which includes a guest speaker from the top tier of politics, science, business, sport or entertainment. Previous guests include former Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and John Howard, long-term Governor of New South Wales Marie Bashir, former NSW Premier Bob Carr, Host of At the Movies Margaret Pomeranz and former Wallabies Captain, now Investment Banker Nick Farr-Jones. Students are given the opportunity to meet and speak to the guests after the dinner. New College is also known for staging a play or musical and a revue on campus each year. The New College Revue is the longest-running annual revue on campus at UNSW.[3]

The college is governed by a Board who appoints a Master of the college. The current Master of the college is Professor Trevor Cairney, and the Dean of Residents, as of 2010, is Ben Gooley.

New College Village

In August 2006 New College embarked on an exciting new building development project. New College constructed a 315-bed postgraduate residential village - New College Village - on a prime site diagonally opposite New College on UNSW western campus. The site opened in early 2009 with an intake of about 315 students primarily international postgraduate students from over 50 nations.

This unique college was the initiative of the current Master, Professor Trevor Cairney. It incorporates many of the elements of community that have been the strength of New College, including academic support (10 Academic Tutors) and strong pastoral care (it has 7 live-in Senior Residents and a Dean).

New College Village (NCV) contains a mixture of studio apartments and 5-6 bedroom shared apartments. NCV provides three catering options: self catered; 3 meals a day, 5 days a week and dinner only, 5 days a week.[4]

Centre for Apologetic Scholarship and Education (CASE)

CASE was established in 2002 by the current Master as an activity of New College. The aim of the centre is to explore Christianity in the context of mainstream university study and research, and educate the community on the place of the Christian worldview. CASE regularly holds seminars, conferences and courses, it runs a scholars program for current PhD students, and it produces the quarterly magazine, Case. Its current director is Professor Trevor Cairney.
