Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, launched in 1967 [ [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2005/06/24/DI2005062401061.html Transcript of interview with Richard Kurin] , director of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian, interviewed by the "Washington Post", June 28, 2005] , is an international exhibition of living cultural heritage presented annually on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It is held for two weeks around the Fourth of July (the US Independence Day) holiday. Each year the festival celebrates the cultural traditions of places inside and outside the United States and other topics of cultural interest.

A separate section of the grounds is devoted to each program of the festival. Exhibits may include crafts, architecture, history, clothing, agriculture, and local religious practices, along with live demonstrations of craftmaking, weaving and sewing, music, dance, and storytelling. Food service booths sell dishes illustrative of the cuisine of the cultures being recognized and a Marketplace sells related crafts and recordings.
