Camp Androscoggin

Camp Androscoggin is an all-boys sports camp in Wayne, Maine. It is owned by Peter and Roberta Hirsch. About 275 campers attend this camp every summer, and it is one of the oldest summer camps in Maine, having just celebrated its 100 year anniversary with a reunion at camp for close to 100 alums. It is ACA (American Camp Association) accredited.

History

Camp Androscoggin was established in 1907 on Sans Souci Island, which has since been renamed "Androscoggin Island" in honor of the camp. Originally there were a mere 7 campers. In 1938, a new "Junior Camp" was added on the beach of Lake Androscoggin, where 8-through-11-year-olds spent their first several years. The two camps briefly combined during World War II due to a fuel shortage, and combined for good on the mainland in 1972. Androscoggin was also the site of the 3rd and 4th Seeds of Peace camps in 1995-96.

Activities

Camp Andro competes in the CMCL, or the Central Maine Camp League, challenging camps Cobbossee, Caribou, Manitou, and others in a variety of sports, including baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, and others. Androscoggin has won the CMCL banner every year since 1999, except for 2005.

Androscoggin also has an extensive overnight and day trip program.

Campers

Campers may attend Andro from ages 8 to 15. Campers come from across the country and around the world.

Facilities

Androscoggin boasts some of the best camp facilities in Maine.

Water

Waterfront activities on 2000 feet of shoreline with separate swim, sail and fish docks include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing and wakeboarding.

Land sports

Andro boasts two baseball fields, two soccer fields, two outdoor and one indoor basketball courts, and twelve tennis courts (including four clay courts). There are also a climbing wall and ranges for archery and riflery.

Arts

There is also an art center, which includes arts and crafts, pottery, woodworking, and animation. The playhouse hosts a variety of musical talent shows and plays over the course of the summer.
