zoologist known for his studies of freshwaterlakes and considered the father of Americanlimnology .Born at
Cambridge inEngland , Hutchinson was educated atGresham's School , Holt and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. After two years of lecturing at theUniversity of the Witwatersrand inSouth Africa , he joined the faculty atYale University in 1928. He became aUS citizen in 1941.His illustrious career at Yale lasted for forty-three years. In 1949, Hutchinson was elected to the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1950 to theNational Academy of Science .After his retirement, he spent much of his time in
England , and he died inLondon on May 17, 1991.He was awarded the
National Medal of Science posthumously in 1991.Publications
