Schulman family

Schulman family

The Schulman family (also written Schulmann, Shulman, Sholman, Scholman and Koulumies) is a family of Baltic German noble origin first mentioned in 1495 on the island of Ösel.

Their reputed origins lie in East Frisia: the Schul- element of the name apparently originates from the German word "Schole" (meaning "shoal").

The elder branch of the family resided in Estonia till 1939 when they resettled in the Wartegau in Germany. After World War II the few still remaining resettled in Germany and Canada. There are five members of this branch in Germany and eleven in Canada. Best known member of this branch is Nik von Schulmann, Director of Production and Operations for Patrick Roberge Productions.

A branch of the family, now the most numerous, became Swedish nobility in Finland. One part of the family changed the name to Koulumies during World War II. Finish television journalist Jyrki Koulumies is the best known member of the family.

Other branches now extinct included one in Sweden and one Livonia.
