To know the Turkish name of a person, place, or thing is to know a little bit about how people of the Turkish culture see the world. This knowing and seeing is of especial importance and significance for the peoples within the European Union and the peoples bordering the Turkish Republic. In order to unlock this culture and view of the world one might begin wilth well-known Turkish names.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

It is appropriate to begin with the name of the Father of the modern Republic of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Orhan Pamuk

One the most well-known Turkish names is that of the Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk.He won the prize for the book My Name is Red. In Turkish, the title reads Benim Adım Kırmızı. The word for the color red appears in both English and Turkish. To understand the Turkish word for red is to have an insight into the meaning of the color red as seen from the Turkish cultural perspective, a meaning which is not given by the English word red. The issue of Color naming is any language is complex.

Ankara

The capital of the Republic of Turkey is located in Ankara.

Istanbul

The largest city in Turkey is Istanbul.

Edirne

The city of Edirne is the name of the first Ottoman capital in Europe.

Turkish names of the modern era are governing by the Law on Family Names promulgated on June 21, 1934. In order to trace ancestors back from the modern era one needs to know how the law changed and how to track back before June 21, 1934.
