Holger F. Struer

Holger F. Struer was a Danish chemist and founder of "H. Struers Chemiske Laboratorium" in 1875 at Skindergade 38, the centre of Copenhagen. Holger F. Struer saw the need for a laboratory making chemical analysis in the strongly developing "modern society".

Struer realizes in 1895 the possibilities of importing chemicals and instruments for the Danish market. Consequently the company starts an import, being the first Danish company to take up this kind of trade. In 1919 Struer obtain the Danish representation of the Austrian company, Reichert. Reichert is a specialist in metallographic microscopes and for this reason the interest for metallography and metallographic analysis is aroused.

In 1943 the Danish scientist Eggert Knuth-Winterfeldt, manager of the materials laboratory in a large Danish industrial company (DISA), contacts Struer with the idea of an instrument for electrolytic polishing. In this way is laid the foundation for a revolution in metallography: Micropol, a preparation machine for polishing of metal samples.

Today H. Struers Chemiske Laboratorium is just called "Struers". The company is specialized in materialography and materials testing, and has more than 40% of the world market. The company is producing equipment and consumables for materialographic preparation, hardness testers and imaging software.
