The 13th Mechanized Infantry Division or "13. Panzergrenadierdivision" is a mechanized division of the German Army.Its staff is based at Leipzig. The division is a unit of the German Army's Stabilization Forces or "Stabilisierungskräfte" and specialized on conflicts of low intensity as well as homeland defense.
The division is Germany's permanent contribution to Multinational Corps North East.

History

The division was formed in 1990 after the German reunification and integrated troops of the former National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic into the new unified military of Germany. The division has seen action on the Balkans in numerous deployments, including one deployment to Kosovo with division commander Lieutenant General Roland Kather serving as KFOR commander. Troops of the division also supported civilian agencies on several occasions during large disasters, such as disastrous floods in Eastern Germany in 1997.
