St. Louis is a professional soccer club to be based in the St. Louis area that will begin play in 2009 in the inaugural season of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS).

History

When the creation of WPS, a new top-flight women's league that would replace/revive the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), was announced in 2006, Saint Louis was one of the then-six cities that would have a team.
On August 26, 2008, it was finally announced in the Alton Telegraph [cite news |url=http://www.thetelegraph.com/sports/national_17624___article.html/brazil_new.html |title=Brazil national coach to lead St. Louis team in new women's league |publisher=Alton Telegraph |date=2008-08-26 ] who Saint Louis' head coach would be, and where the team would play its first season (Jeff Cooper's organization St. Louis Soccer United has plans for a soccer-specific stadium ready, but the construction will not start until St. Louis is also awarded a Major League Soccer franchise).
On September 11, 2008, "St. Louis" was revealed to be the official team name on websites (such as the FaceBook group page and the WPS fan site) through a video [cite news |url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJLO6YBPaUI |title=The STL-WPS has a new logo! |publisher=YouTube |date=2008-09-11 ] , along with a new team crest.

Player Allocation

On 16 September 2008 the initial WPS player allocation was conducted; US Women's National Team players Hope Solo, Lori Chalupny and Tina Ellertson were allocated to St. Louis. [http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2008/09/wps_allocation_list.html]

On 24 September 2008 the WPS International player allocation was conducted; Brazilians Daniela and Renata Costa, Swedish striker Lotta Schelin and Canadian Melissa Tancredi also were allocated to St. Louis. [http://www.womensprosoccer.com/newsitem_ektid5106.aspx]

On 6 October 2008 the WPS General Draft took place. St. Louis drafted players India Trotter, Angie Woznuk, Joanna Lohman and Amanda Cinalli. [http://www.uslsoccer.com/home/282649.html] The rest of the roster will be completed in due course.
