Johann Altfuldisch

Johann Altfuldisch, (* November 11, 1911 at Brückenau, Austria; † May 28, 1947 at Landsberg am Lech) belonged to the guards of the concentration camp Mauthausen. He was SS-Obersturmführer, a high ranking position in the SS regime. Temporarily Altfuldisch was vice chief of the central part of the concentration camp Mauthausen.

Altfuldisch was a member of the NSDAP and later on he joint the SS. In 1936 he began working at the concentration camp Sachsenhausen. In 1938 he joint the Waffen-SS. Between 1938 and 1945 he helt the second highest ranking position at the concentration camp Mauthausen. Altfuldisch ordered and participated in many executions.

After the end of World War II Altfuldisch was charged by the US-military court at Dachau to have participated in executions of special ethnic groups or war prisoners. Shortly before the camp was liberated by US troops, Altfuldisch even gassed prisoners at the Mauthausen gas chamber. Witnesses testified that Altfuldisch not only gave orders to kill prisoners he even killed by himself .

On May 13, 1945 Altfuldisch was found guilty committing above mentioned crimes. He was hanged on May 28, 1945 at the prison for war criminals at Landsberg. His last words had been: “I die for Germany!”
