Ghotki

Ghotki

Ghotki ( _ur. گھوٹکی) Ghotki is a town of Northern Sindh, Pakistan. Mirpur Mathelo is capital of Ghotki District. It was the site of the July 13, 2005, Ghotki rail crash.

Ghotki has very hot weather around the year and winter only lasts for 3 months. Ghotki has very fertile land and main crops it produces are Cotton, Wheat and Rice.

History of Ghotki

Ghotki was founded by an ambassador general of Raja Ibn Selaj Birhman (a relative of Raja Dahar of Sindh) of the Sindh in 637 A.D (15th year of Hijra) named Hath Sam who set up an army settlement/camp after defeating a Muslim Army of Arabia. The camp later assumed the shape of a village on 17th Shaban in 17th year of Hijra (639 A.D) when people of different tribes came to settle here. Two years later the people deserted this village and it again became a land of birds and animals. In year 695 A.D certain fishermen came here and settled and named the village as "Miani". But when the river changed its direction the people left the village again to the mercy of jackals.

In 712 A.D Mohammad Bin Qasim conquered the Sindh by defeating Raja Dahar. Ghot Ibn Samed Ibn Patel a Hindu born to a son of Raja Dahar was settled here. Ghot voluntarily and happily accepted the Islam on the hands of Arabs and married to a new Muslim -Emna according to Shariat-e-Mohammadi and gave birth to a baby boy Tameer from whom the Ghota tribe came into being. Arabs awarded many jagirs to Ghotas and named this village as "Dharwali" to honour their grandfather Subsequently as the Ghotas progressed quantitatively and culturally the name of village was changed from Dharwali to Ghotki on 25th Rajab in 923 year of Hijra (A.D 13th August 1517).

Jamia Masjid ("Jamia" Mosque)

In the Ghotki there is a historical grand mosque known as Jamia Masjid Ghotki. According to a hand-written book "Sahih-ul-Subaten" of Gul Mohammad, that is available in the library of the Madrassa Qasim-ul-uloom of the Ghotki, Syed Abu Saleh Moosa Shah Hussiani Jillani who was the main khalifa of the famous saint Hazrat Sultan Baho of district Jhang in the days of Mian Noor Mohammad S/O Mian Yaar Mohammad Abbasi / Kalhoro in the year 1148 hijra constructed this Mosque. This Jamia Masjid is a large mosque and is one of the oldest mosques of the Sindh.

In the construction of this mosque Syed Moosa Shah himself took part along with his followers. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai who is world famous Sindhi poet as he was the close friend of Syed Moosa Shah also visited this mosque. Here is the railway station for the people.

BRIEF HISTORY

Under British Rule - Prior to 1843, Ghotki was named as Loi Sahiban Qadriya – in 1887 Sir Charlis Neepier an English Governor of Sindh who toured this area to whom various Hindus and Muslims notable paid a courtesy call but one Syed Saleh Muhammad Shah the feudal lord did not come to see the British Governor which enraged the Britishers to such an extent that they cancelled all Jagirs and Sanads of Syeds/Sadats and changed the name from Loi Sahiban Qadriya to Ghotki which still continues till today. Simultaneously, Mirpur Mathelo the present headquarter of the district was also established during the year 1839 by Mir Masoo Khan Talpur and was firstly named as Mirpur Mathelo and later to Mirpur mathelo which still continues till today.

At the time of Pakistan’s coming into being in 1947 Ghotki was one of the talukas of district Sukkur with the passage of time it went on exponding in all fields of life and ultimately attained all necessary qualification for its justified establishment as an independent district. Eventually it came into being as district in 1993 from bifrication of district Sukkur. Under the administrative setup it consists of five talukas namely Ghotki,Mirpur Mathelo (being district headquarter), Khangarh,Daharki and Ubauro.

The geographical boundaries of the district are as follows:

East District Rahimyar Khan of Province of Punjab North District Jacobabad Province of Sindh West District Sukkur Province of SindhSouth Indian border with Jaisalmir being the nearest district of India.

This district is very much rich with natural gas giving production worth billions ever year – Two of the largest fertilizer industries and one power generating industry are established and functioning here since last many decades. Besides these major industries many of cotton ginning units the life of people of this district could not touch/reach the level of prosperity, which seems to benefits of above large commercial activities have not reached up to common people.

Literacy rate has not been risen to a satisfactory level. The reason eing 75% of district are engaged with agricultural sector in rural areas. People reside in remote area of district who are leading a miserable life as none of the basis amenity of life has been conveyed there. The desert of district Ghotki mainly depends upon rain which is very acute here. Consequently lands of desert are not cultivated regularly. The desert area suffered badly from acute shortage of potable water. Besides this a number of various problems pertaining to health, education, communication, exists there. To streamline with other urbanized districts of province many of short termed as well as long-termed schemes are required to be chalked out. However following civic aminites are suggested on top-priority.

 Village Electrification.

 Supply of natural Gas.

 Natural gas for fuel purpose has been supplied to Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo and Daharki whereas Khangarh Sharif and Ubauro towns still looking for this trifle facility even in 21 century.

 Water supply schemes including water supply schemes in desert..

 Betterment of sewerage system.

 Establishment of community hall.

 Public parks.

 Play grounds.

 Gymkhanas

 Broadcasting station.

Concluding this it is suggested that a Consultant may be appointed for the purpose so that actual survey of Master Plan be done.
