The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is an undergraduate and graduate institution for the performing arts in the United States. It is part of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The School of Music, Theatre & Dance is headed by Christopher Kendall, dean. Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity was founded at the School of Music on June 12, 1903. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity's Epsilon Chapter was formed at the School of Music in 1902.

With the exception of the Department of Dance, the School is located on the University of Michigan's North Campus, which is also home to the College of Engineering, the School of Information, and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

The school was named "School of Music", until July 1, 2006, when it was changed to "School of Music, Theatre & Dance". [http://www.music.umich.edu/about/news.htm#NewName]

Academics and faculty

Fifteen departments make up the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. They include:

*The Department of Composition - Faculty include Michael Daugherty, William Bolcom, Evan Chambers, Erik Santos, Bright Sheng, Kristen Kuster, and Paul Schoenfield. Recent Visiting Professors of Composition have included Betsy Jolas and Karen Tanaka.

*The Department of Conducting - A graduate-only program. Faculty include Jerry O. Blackstone, Scott Bersaglia, Scott Boerma, Rodney Dorsey, Andrew George, Michael Haithcock, Kenneth Kiesler, Theodore Morrison, Paul Rardin, Susan Walton, and Marianne Ploger Hill.

*The Department of Dance - Faculty include Bill DeYoung, Melissa Beck Matjias, Mary Martha Cole, Gay Ann Delanghe, Sandra Torijano DeYoung, Jessica Kimlat Fogel, Beth Genne, Linda D. Goodrich-Weng, Christian Matjias, Judy Rice, Stephen J. Rush, Peter Sparling, Robin Wilson, Jean-Claude Biza, and Christine Naughton.

*The Department of Jazz and Improvisation Studies - Faculty include Edward W. Sarath, Geri Allen, Michael Gould, Robert Hurst, Ellen H. Rowe, Donald Walden, Dennis Wilson, Marion Hayden, Mark Kirschenmann, William Lucas, and Martha Travers.

*The Department of Music Education - Faculty include Marie McCarthy, Colleen M. Conway, Robert Culver, Carol P. Richardson, Julie Skadsem, and Betty Anne Younker

*The Department of Strings - Faculty include, Lynne Aspnes (Professor Emeritus), Richard Aaron, Anthony Elliott, Yehonatan Berick, Aaron Berofsky, Diana Gannett (Chair), Andrew Jennings, Yizhak Schotten and Stephen Shipps. Associated Faculty includes, Caroline Coade, Robert Culver and Stephen Molina.
