Washington Times-Herald

The "Washington Times-Herald" was an American daily newspaper once published in Washington, D.C.

The "Times-Herald" was created by the 1939 merger of two former Hearst dailies, the "Washington Times" (founded in 1893 by William Randolph Hearst and not to be confused with the current "Washington Times") and the "Washington Herald". Cissy Patterson ran the merged publication until her death in 1948; it was subsequently purchased by her cousin, Robert R. McCormick (then-publisher and editor of the "Chicago Tribune"), along with Cissy Patterson's brother Joseph. Both Patterson and McCormick maintained an arch-conservative editorial stance for the paper.

In 1954, the "Times-Herald" was purchased by, and merged into its more liberal rival, the "Washington Post". For a time, the combined paper was officially known as the "Washington Post and Times-Herald"; the "Times-Herald" portion of the masthead became less and less prominent in ensuing years, however, and was dropped entirely in 1973.
