hydatid cyst

hydatid cyst
Large cyst in the viscera of sheep cattle or man following ingestion of eggs of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, a cestode. In the normal host the eggs develop into intestinal worms but in abnormal hosts the larvae penetrate through the wall of the intestine and migrate to liver and other organs. The cyst contains many scolices that can form further cysts if liberated: it is thus a metastasising parasite.
