glucose

glucose
(= dextrose)
Six-carbon sugar (aldohexose) widely distributed in plants and animals. Breakdown of glucose (glycolysis) is a major energy source for metabolic processes. In green plants, glucose is a major product of photosynthesis, and is stored as the polymer starch. In animals it is obtained chiefly from dietary di- and polysaccharides, but also by gluconeogenesis, and is stored as glycogen. Storage polymer in microorganisms is dextran.
