agmatine
(= 1-amino-4-guanidobutane)
A metabolite of arginine via arginine decarboxylase, is metabolized to putrescine by agmatinase. Suppresses polyamine biosynthesis and polyamine uptake by cells by inducing antizyme. Binds to imidazoline receptors and alpha-2-adrenoreceptors but with different affinities and is thought to be the endogenous ligand for imidazoline (I1) receptors. On the basis of its distribution in the brain is proposed to be a neurotransmitter involved in behavioural and visceral control. An increasing range of biological activities are being described.
