Cistern Cis"tern, n. [OE. cisterne, OF. cisterne, F. cisterne, fr. L. cisterna, fr. cista box, chest. See {Cist}, and cf. {chest}.] 1. An artificial reservoir or tank for holding water, beer, or other liquids. [1913 Webster]
